ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads for a small business
Both are auctions you pay per click. Almost everything else differs, and the differences decide whether a small business should test the new one now or wait.
| Dimension | Google Ads (Search) | ChatGPT ads |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers the ad | A typed query matched to your keywords | The context and intent of a conversation, your landing page, your copy and the context hints you write. Hints are not exact match keywords1 |
| Where it appears | Above and below organic results | Below the end of a ChatGPT response, labelled sponsored, separate from the answer |
| Who can see it | Anyone searching | Logged in adults on the Free and Go plans in live countries. No ads on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu |
| Pricing | CPC, CPM, CPA and value based bidding, years of public benchmarks | CPC, CPM and conversion optimised bidding. Recommended starting bid USD 3 to 5 per click. OpenAI publishes no benchmarks2 |
| Minimum | None | USD 25 a day per campaign in the US, as an average over seven days |

What this means for a test budget
Keep Google running. Give ChatGPT ads a budget it cannot damage, at least USD 750 a month and ideally USD 3,000, for three months, with the pixel installed before the first click. Judge it on the same cost per lead or per order you hold Google to, not on clicks, because the audience is smaller and the intent is different.
Two kinds of business tend to be worth testing first: those whose buyers describe a problem before they know the product name, because that is a conversation and not a query, and those whose Google costs have climbed past what the margin tolerates. Two kinds should wait: businesses whose buyers are on paid ChatGPT plans, and businesses in a category OpenAI restricts.
And Meta
The comparison people search for second is ChatGPT ads against Facebook and Instagram ads. Meta reaches almost every adult and interrupts them with a creative; it makes demand. ChatGPT ads reach a person who has just described what they want to a machine; they catch demand. The budgets do different jobs and the creative that works on one rarely works on the other. If the choice is either or, the question is whether your buyers already know they have a problem.
Check eligibility and size a test budget, or read what the clicks cost.
Questions about the comparison
Should I move my Google Ads budget to ChatGPT?
- No. Google Ads has years of your conversion data and a mature auction; ChatGPT ads is a beta with no benchmarks, by OpenAI's own description. The sensible move is a separate test budget for three months, measured against the same cost per acquisition you hold Google to.
Which is cheaper per click?
- Nobody can tell you for your category. Google's average CPC is public by industry; OpenAI publishes only a starting bid of USD 3 to 5 and no averages. Cost per click is also the wrong comparison. Compare cost per lead or per order after a controlled test.
Do ChatGPT ads reach the same people as Facebook ads?
- A smaller, different slice. ChatGPT ads show only to logged in adults on the Free and Go plans in live countries, and only under a relevant conversation. Meta reaches almost everyone and interrupts them. One catches a person mid decision; the other creates the decision. They are not substitutes.
